About Lincoln Park Zoo

The Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago is one of the oldest zoos in the country, opening its gates in 1868. Home to over 1,100 animals from more than 200 species, the zoo is one of the few with free admission. Many of the animals were donated from other states such as the four swans from New York, a bear cub from the Philadelphia Zoo, and bison from Yellowstone National Park. 

With 49 acres divided into 15 sections, you can visit all the animals from the hippos, rhinos, and giraffes of the African Journey to the swans, geese, and flamingos at the Waterfowl Lagoon. The Center for African Apes and the Helen Branch Primate House are two of the favorites for many visitors. And the Children’s Zoo is not just for kids. Go on in and see what they have.

Recharge at the Safari Café with some hot dogs or burgers and beer at the Bird’s Eye Bar & Grill. The Park Place Café has a huge variety of food from nachos to ice cream. Take the train to the carousel for a ride or stroll on the Nature Boardwalk, where you can see even more flora and fauna. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop for some awesome souvenirs like t-shirts and stuffed animals.

Fun Fact: Café Brauer at the zoo has become a popular wedding spot for lovers all over the world, some renting the entire zoo for 20,000 guests.

Just 11 miles from the zoo on East Randolph Street, you can stroll along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, take selfies with the Cloud Gate, and enjoy the beauty of Lurie Garden at Millennium Park. Take a trip across the BP Pedestrian Bridge to Maggie Daley Park to climb the rock walls and see the Bloch Cancer Survivor’s Garden. Some of the other popular attractions in the park include the Nichols Bridgeway, Boeing Galleries, Crown Foundation, and the Harris Theater. During the winter, get out on the ice rink, a giant food court during the warmer months. As part of the larger Grant Park, the space is often referred to as Chicago’s front yard with over 300 acres of green space, memorials, and activities to explore. The Field Museum on South Lakeshore Drive is only 14 minutes from the zoo and is the home of Sue, the world’s largest Tyrannosaurus Rex ever found. She is 40 feet long and 13 feet tall. After you get a selfie with Sue, you can check out the Tsavo Maneaters in the African Mammal exhibit or get some photos of the 23 mummies on display in the Ancient Egypt exhibit. See jade, diamonds, and other gems from the past 8,000 years in the Geology Halls. Learn about evolution at the Evolving Planet exhibit that takes you back more than four billion years. With over 400,000 specimens and artifacts from fossils to fungi and meteorites to mammals, you will be stunned at the amazing things to discover. Navy Pier will keep you busy all day and into the night if you have the time. Located on East Grand Avenue, the pier is over 3,300 feet long, jutting out over Lake Michigan with dozens of attractions. It may be hard to believe, but Navy Pier has about 50 acres of exhibitions, eateries, retailers, gardens, and even parks. And if you are a fan of carnival rides, you’re in luck because they have a Ferris wheel, carousel, wave swinger, and more. Visit the museum, theater, or crystal gardens to learn about the culture, flora, and fauna of Chicago. If you get hungry, there are 35 different places to eat, such as Big City Chicken, Ben and Jerry’s, and the Potbelly Sandwich Shop.
