About Wicker Park

This neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois has a hip and community culture as well as a wonderful nightlife and other fun places for young adults. The whole neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places in Chicago and is also a landmark district. Incorporated in 1837 with industry following soon after, the culture of the community was mostly Irish until the late 1800s when Norwegians and Germans moved into the area. Today, Wicker Park is a popular spot with over 26,000 residents of all cultures. In fact, Wicker Park was named number four hippest hipster neighborhood in the country by Forbes magazine in 2012. 

With dozens of cafés, vintage shops, clubs, and coffee houses in Wicker Park, many people who live in town do not venture out of the neighborhood often. And the locals in the greater Chicago area also spend a lot of time there. Many come to town via the Bloomingdale Trail (the 606) and the Chicago Riverwalk. Being so close to Lake Michigan, there are also over a dozen beaches to enjoy like Fullerton, Montrose, Foster, and Wilson Beach. Don’t forget to pack the sunscreen.

In addition to the permanent collection, the museum features different exhibits throughout the year. The gift shop is a great place to buy some unique souvenirs while you are there, and you can get a bite to eat at the North & Clark Café. Just 17 minutes from Lincoln Park on North Cannon Drive, there is also a museum for nature lovers. Founded in 1857, this was actually the first museum in the west. However, during the Great Fire of 1871, everything was lost, and they had to build it up all over again. Some of the species and specimens include 71,100 insects, 23,200 reptiles and amphibians, 5,200 mammals, and 13,900 birds. There are also over 2,300 cultural artifacts and 23,200 fossils. The museum is separated into sections like the Mysteries of the Marsh, Riverworks, Hands-On Habitat, Wilderness Walk, and the Butterfly Haven. Two galleries are full of photos, and other artwork, and the third level has a rooftop garden and birdwalk. You’ll find plenty of unique souvenirs in the gift shop, including shirts, mugs, and toys.
