About Champs-Élysées
Located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, the Champs-Élysées is one of the best-known streets in the world. Running in an arrow-straight line from the Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs is an integral part of the historic heart of Paris.
Nowadays, the Champs-Élysées is known for some of the most glamorous luxury shopping in the world. It wasn't always this way. The area was once mostly gardens and parkland. But in 1667, a new avenue was planned as the entrance to a palace of King Louis XIV. Originally known as the Grand Promenade, it was renamed the Champs-Élysées in 1709. It takes its name from the mythical Greek Elysian fields, where heroes went after they died.
In the mid-18th century, Paris was substantially remodeled. At this time, the Champs-Élysées was widened. The Arc de Triomphe, raised in 1836 to commemorate Napoleon Bonaparte's victories, provided a new focal point. The street soon became popular with Paris' rich and influential citizens.
Because of its width, the Champs-Élysées has been the site of many military parades throughout history. German troops marched along the boulevard in 1871 and in 1940 to celebrate victories over France. The US 28th infantry also marched down the Champs-Élysées in 1944. It still serves as a focus for national celebrations to this day.
Things to do near Champs-Élysées
Thanks to its location in the heart of Paris, the Champs-Élysées is close to many of the city's best attractions. You won't need to go far from this grand boulevard to see much of what makes Paris so special. And the boulevard itself is a worthy tourist attraction in its own right.
- Go shopping along the Champs-Élysées. This Parisien street is known as one of the world centers for luxury goods. And if you can't afford the eye-watering price tags, you can at least do some window shopping. Plus, there's an endless variety of cafés and bistros along the Champs where you can live like a millionaire, at least for a couple of hours.
- Get a quintessential Paris photo at the Arc de Triomphe. This impressive monument is slightly spoiled by sitting in the center of a busy traffic circle. But it's still an unforgettable sight, especially at night. Plus, you can climb the 200 steps up to the roof for an impressive view over the city.
- Take a stroll in the Jardins des Champs-Elysees. Established even before the street that shares its name, this city park goes back to the 17th century. Filled with monumental statues, fountains, and even a theater, the park is also a great place to relax and get away from the noise and traffic of Paris.
- See one of the centers of French power at the Elysée Palace. Built in the 18 century, this palace was home to various members of the French nobility, and is now the official residence of the president of France. Larger than the White House, this vast palace can be visited on European heritage days when it opens its gates to the public.
- Explore one of the world's greatest collections of art at the Louvre. Home to the Mona Lisa along with thousands of other priceless works of art, this museum is recognized as one of the best in the world, and is one of France's top tourist attractions.
Transit options near Champs-Élysées
- Gare d l’Est is one of Paris’s main train stations connecting the city to the rest of France and to other cities throughout Europe. Close to the Champs-Élysées, it can be reached by Metro in about 20 minutes.
- George V Metro station sits right in the middle of the Champs-Élysées and is served by Metro Line 1. Franklin D Roosevelt station is at the southeast end of the Champs, and is served by Metro lines 1 and 9.
- City buses 32 and 73 travel down the Champs-Élysées itself. These buses connect you to Paris' broader transit network. However, for most visitors, the Metro is an easier way to get around.
