About Santa Monica Pier

When one thinks of a good time in Southern California, the Santa Monica Pier almost always comes to mind first. Located at the foot of Colorado Avenue, this massive double-jointed pier is in the coastal city of Santa Monica in California. The famous icon of the city first opened on September 9, 1909, with two separate piers – Municipal Pier and Pleasure Pier. The former was primarily used to carry sewer pipes and had no facilities on it. The latter was home to a few attractions, including a few rides such as a wooden roller coaster, merry-go-round, funhouse, and more. Eventually, these two piers were merged, forming what is now known as the Santa Monica Pier.

The Pier, as it is commonly referred to by locals, has long been an iconic landmark for the city and is frequented by both locals and tourists. This is because the area is filled with attractions that people of all ages can enjoy. Experience the famous Pacific Park amusement park and the well-beloved Looff Hippodrome Carousel. Browse the numerous shops and sample wares from the concession stands, restaurants, and bars found in the area. Enjoy live local music and street performances and be amazed by incredible views of South Bay and Malibu during your time here. Because of the variety of things to do, Santa Monica Pier is definitely a must-visit in Southern California.

Fun fact: Santa Monica Pier marks the end of the popular Route 66, which was constructed in 1926 to serve between Los Angeles and Chicago. After much argument about the topic, Santa Monica Pier was officially declared as the end of the road by the Route 66 Alliance in 2009.
