Gatwick Airport is located in West Sussex, London, and is a major hub for many airlines. Handling over 46 million passengers per year, it is the second most popular airport in the UK, just behind Heathrow Airport. The airport actually opened up in the late 1920s but has only been used for commercial flights since 1933. Although they only have two runways, they service almost 50 airlines all over the world.

Things to do in Gatwick Airport

  • Take a nap. There are two hotels inside the airport where you can go for a few hours to take a snooze, watch TV, or have a shower. They actually rent them in blocks of four hours for a lower fee than for a whole night.
  • Wear out the kids. There is a children’s play area in each terminal airside by departures. It is called the Kids Zone, and they have cartoons on television as well as toys and play equipment. 
  • Retail therapy is good for everyone. Buy some souvenirs, browse, or look for today’s newspaper.
  • Relax. There are two chapels in the airport, one in each terminal, open 24 hours a day. They even hold services for a variety of different faiths on certain days. Or you can just relax and enjoy some meditation.
  • Get spoiled. Book one of the lounges at the airport. Each terminal has a group lounge with a bar, food, and comfortable seating. You can also choose a secluded clubroom with cocktails, an extensive wine list, à la carte dining, and private table service.

  • Gatwick Aviation Museum: Less than four miles from the hangar on Lowfield Heath Road, the Gatwick Aviation Museum is actually on the airport property. See a huge collection of British aircraft from the Second World War to the 1970s, including the Percival, Blackburn, Gloster, Hawker, and Avro. They even have a nature trail and refreshments. 
  • Lowfield Heath Windmill: Just a few miles from Gatwick, this historic windmill in Charlwood, Surrey, is a fabulous place to visit while you are here. Built in 1737, the windmill is one of the oldest working windmills in the country. Drop off your luggage with Bounce and visit the grounds anytime for a picnic or just take a walk around.   • Reigate Caves: Have you ever been in a cave? These unique caves about seven miles from the airport are different from all the others. The main difference in Barons’ Cave is that it’s not lit. All guests have to carry their own lantern, making it especially spooky and fun. The Tunnel Road Caves are lit and a bit more modern but date back to the 1800s. Don’t bring your bags, though.   • British Wildlife Centre: On Eastbourne Road, 10 miles from the airport, this impressive zoo has over 40 different species native to the area. Scottish wildcats, hedgehogs, red deer, and stoats are just some of the adorable creatures you can see. Grab your camera from your bags before dropping them with Bounce. 
  • Go Ape: If you are looking for some extreme adventures to get your blood pumping, head to Go Ape just seven miles from the airport in Tilgate Park. For a more mellow experience, jump on a Segway for a trip around the park.
  • Buchan Country Park: Enjoy 170 acres of green fields, vibrant wildflowers, and trails at this park just eight miles from the airport on Horsham Road. Visit the Countryside Centre, have a bite to eat in the picnic area, or enjoy some coffee at the CoffeEco Mobile Barista. 
  • Cherry Lane Adventure Playground: If you need to keep the kids busy for a couple of hours, this playground on Cherry Lane is the perfect spot for that. It’s only six miles from the airport, and they have both indoor and outdoor activities. The kids can do some ziplining, climb the walls, jump on trampolines, and even ride go-karts.
