About Vauxhall

Situated near Lambeth and Waterloo, Vauxhall often gets the cold shoulder from tourists in London. That would be a shame since this flourishing neighborhood is on the rise and seeing an influx of new residents. Vauxhall shed part of its industrial past as warehouses and factories morphed into waterfront residential properties.

The perfect location beside the Vauxhall Bridge and a quick jaunt from Westminster make it an attractive spot for young professionals. With a sprawling nightlife scene and increased office space, it’s a fantastic area to work and play. Vauxhall gained a noted reputation as one of London’s top LGBT-friendly districts, and there’s a large concentration of gay bars, clubs, and businesses.

Don’t think it’s only about the nightlife when you step off the tube or St. George Wharf Pier. Vauxhall shines with its beautiful urban parks and gardens that host an abundance of recreational activities. From sports facilities and playgrounds to kid-friendly farms, Vauxhall has its fair share of green spaces.

Vauxhall residents enjoy the perks of being one of central London’s best-connected neighborhoods. The Vauxhall Cross Transport Interchange eased congestion in the area, and residents have access to tube stations, bus stops, and railway stations in the same vicinity.

Attractions and activities near Vauxhall

  • Kennington Park: Roughly one mile from the Vauxhall Bridge, Kennington Park has been the site of several dramatic events in London’s history. Although it opened as a public park in 1854, the location was formerly known as Kennington Common.
The area was widely used for public executions and events to watch public orators. Just a few years before Kennington Common became an urban park, it was the site of a massive protest for male suffrage.
Things are more peaceful today since Kennington Park has grown into a popular location for recreational activities. Visitors will find basketball courts, tennis courts, playgrounds, and exercise equipment. Since The Oval is only a few blocks away, Kennington Park hosts lots of Cricket matches at the Community Cricket Ground.
  • SIS Building: The SIS Building is not a place you can wander inside, but its façade still leaves a little tingle down your spine. Looming high above the River Thames, the gargantuan building at Vauxhall Cross is home to the MI6, the foreign intelligence agency of the United Kingdom government.
Security concerns and expensive upgrade costs forced the MI6 to leave its former headquarters before settling in Vauxhall. A group of industrial buildings stood here until architect Terry Farrell designed the structure that stands today. It's rumored that the building includes all sorts of nooks and crannies, such as underground tunnels.
Similar to Kennington Common, the site witnessed dramatic events years ago. An anti-tank rocket attack in 2000 caused a stressful disturbance and heightened security awareness around the building. Over the years, members of the Royal Family visited the building for intelligence briefings, and Hollywood included the MI6 headquarters in several James Bond films.
  • Above The Stag Theatre: Above The Stag Theatre proves that Vauxhall isn’t just about its raging nightclubs. The performing arts venue stands out since it’s the only place in London that caters to LGBT-themed productions year-round.
Show attendees witness intimate displays of talent due to the facility’s limited seating. The max capacity fails to reach 200, but the actors captivate the audience with profound performances.
Take a closer look outside the venue, and you’ll notice that it rests beneath railway arches. Surprisingly, the occasional trains that rumble above the theatre don’t seem to hamper the acoustics of each show.
