About Hammersmith

The diverse area of Hammersmith attracts all types of travelers who visit the area to experience the buzzing atmosphere for themselves. Whether you’re there to hit up the pubs and restaurants, wander along the Thames or lose yourself in art and music, Hammersmith will show you a whole new side to London. It also has an extensive history with parks like Ravenscourt that date back to the 12th Century and local drinking holes such as the Dove which were frequented by people like Ernest Hemmingway.

The name ‘Hammersmith’ dates back to 1294 and is assumed to refer to the presence of a hammer smithy in the area during that time. Originally a fishing village, the area continued to develop through the Middle Ages and even acquired its own church, St Paul’s, in 1631. By 1687, a sense of royalty had been brought to the region with the widowed Catherine of Braganza (Queen Consort of Charles II) moving to the area. This continued to stimulate the growth of Hammersmith throughout the 19th Century and in 1827 the iconic Hammersmith Bridge was opened. By the late 19th Century, King Street had become the main shopping center of Hammersmith and remains this way today. The area was further urbanized throughout the 20th Century, although if you stroll through the streets you will observe architecture that pays homage to times gone by.
