About Brooklyn

Settled in 1634, Brooklyn is a large borough with more than 2.6 million residents, making it the most populous borough in the state. Founded by the Dutch, it started out as Breuckelen, named after a Dutch Village in the Netherlands. The Battle of Brooklyn in 1776 gave way to British soldiers taking over the New York Harbor until 1783 when they left the city.

With tourist attractions like the Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island, and the New York Aquarium, there is plenty to do and see in the borough. Surrounded by water on three sides, beaches are found all over Brooklyn. Some of the most popular include Rockaway Beach, Fort Tilden, Brighton Beach, and Jacob Riis Park. Grab a bite to eat at one of the cafés or restaurants in town like Calaca Mexican cuisine on Putnam, the Crabby Shack on Franklin, or Madame Poupon on Nostrand Avenue. 

Brooklyn has its fair share of shopping malls, boutiques, and department stores to peruse as well as tiny souvenir shops and markets. In fact, if you head either way on Atlantic Avenue, you will run into dozens of retailers to choose from. Fun Fact: The teddy bear was invented in Brooklyn by Morris and Rose Michtom and was named after Theodore Roosevelt because he refused to shoot a bear while hunting.

You just cannot beat Coney Island. The venue has roller coasters, games, a giant aquarium, and even a beach. It began as a seaside resort in the 1850s but after amusement parks and rides moved in, the attractions built up to what it is today. And it never really stops growing. Luna Park boasts three acres of fun and games with 28 rides and eight roller coasters. The 1927 Coney Island Cyclone is the oldest wooden roller coaster in the United States and is still entertaining people in Brooklyn. The 1918 Wonder Wheel is even older and takes you up 150 feet in the air for an amazing view of the city. And the 2.7-mile beach is full of golden sand with plenty of room to swim as well as eateries and shops to peruse.
