About Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in New York was a gift from the people of France in 1886 and was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. The 305-foot copper statue is a figure of Libertas, who was the Goddess of Liberty. She is holding a tabula ansata (tablet) in her left hand and a torch in her right hand. The tablet is inscribed with July 4, 1776, which was the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
Today, the Statue of Liberty is on what is called Liberty Island in the middle of the New York Harbor. It is part of the National Park that includes Ellis Island as well as the Statue of Liberty Museum and the Ellis Island Museum of Immigration. Because it is only accessible by ferry, you will have to purchase a ticket to ride the ferry to one of the islands. Ellis Island is a historical site opened in 1892 as an immigration station. It was the gateway to America for millions of immigrants arriving from all over the world.
Fun Fact: Bartholdi modeled the face of Lady Liberty after his mother, Augusta.
