About Manhattan

Manhattan has more than 1.6 million residents in its small space, making it the most densely populated borough in New York. The borough was discovered in 1524 by Giovanni da Verrazzano who was an explorer from Florentine. He was the first to visit what is now New York, although it was occupied for hundreds of years before by the Lenape Indians. The borough was not settled until 100 years later when construction was started in what is now known as New Amsterdam.

This well-known borough has many of the state’s most popular attractions such as the Empire State Building, Central Park, and Times Square. Other important places include One World Trade Center, Grand Central Station, Brooklyn Bridge, and of course, the Statue of Liberty. Being surrounded by water, Manhattan also has some awesome parks and beaches to visit.

The beach in Fort Washington Park along the Hudson River is the most popular with its historic structures as well as Manhattan’s only lighthouse. The 160-acre park boasts thick forests, beautiful meadows, and amazing cliffs. You may also enjoy the Riverbank Park, where they have a greenhouse, carousel, picnic areas, a theater, and a huge restaurant.

Fun Fact: The Empire State Building has its own zip code, 10118.

On Pier 86, less than 10 miles from the city of Brooklyn, this unique museum shares a ton of information aboard the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier. You’ll see the USS Growler, a submarine built in the 1950s to launch cruise missiles. Also featured are the Space Shuttle Enterprise, an F-15 Fighting Falcon, a Lockheed A-12, an F-4 Phantom II, and over two dozen other aircraft. Don’t miss the 4D experience of Stories of Intrepid, a film that makes you feel like you are in the cockpit with the pilots. Also, the G-Force simulator lets you fly your own jet, fly with the Screaming Eagles, or tag along with the Blue Angels. You can take a guided tour or an audio tour on your own; it’s up to you. But don’t bring your bags because they are not allowed. One of our local Bounce affiliates will be happy to keep them safe for you.
