About Syracuse

Syracuse is a city in the state of New York and serves as the seat of Onondaga County. The city is ranked fifth most populous in New York, with an average population of over 145,000 residents. Syracuse was named after the Greek city of the same name found on the eastern side of Sicily, Italy. Located at the northeast side of the Finger Lakes region, at the intersection of Interstates 81 and 90, Syracuse has a reputation for being one of the best-preserved cities in New York. The city has long been an educational and economic center in Central New York.

More often than not, Syracuse is overshadowed by nearby cities like New York City, Boston, or Philadelphia. However, during recent years, Syracuse has come to its own, and more and more people are starting to appreciate the city even more. While the area has gone through some urbanization, it has a treasure trove of historical landmarks and restored buildings. Away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities, Syracuse has plenty of attractions and activities to keep you busy.

Fun fact: Syracuse was named “One of America’s Top 20 Green Cities” by National Geographic’s Green Guide.

Luggage Storage near Erie Canal Museum

Established in 1962, the Erie Canal Museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and development of the Erie Canal, a 363-mile long canal that stretched from Buffalo to Albany. Dating back to 1825, the Erie Canal was one of the country’s biggest projects and was constructed over a span of eight years. At the museum, you will find a permanent collection of artifacts, images, paintings, and interactive displays and exhibits related to the Erie Canal and its story.

While the display is definitely impressive and eye-opening, the crown jewel of the museum is the building where it’s located. The 1850 building was used to weigh the boats that traveled on Erie Canal. It is one of the city’s best-preserved buildings and the last existing weighlock building in the United States; you can even view a replica of the boat used to sail the canal at the museum. The best part about visiting the Erie Canal Museum is that entrance is free. For a hassle-free visit, leave your things with Bounce beforehand.

You can even go fishing at the lake to try and catch some bass or pike. All in all, the Onondaga Lake Park is a great place to spend some outdoor fun.
