About Scarborough
Scarborough is an administrative region of the city of Toronto. Situated in the city’s eastern side, Scarborough was named after the English town of the same name by Elizabeth Simcoe, the wife of Upper Canada’s first lieutenant-governor John Graves Simcoe. The reason for her choice was that the bluffs along the shore of Lake Ontario were reminiscent of the limestone cliffs found in the town of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, England.
During the 1790s, most of the settlers in Scarborough were Europeans who produced small villages and farms in the area. In 1850, it was incorporated as a township, became a part of Metropolitan Toronto in 1953, and was eventually assigned as a borough in 1967. Over the next couple of years, the town quickly evolved into a more urbanized area, and by 1998, Scarborough merged with the other boroughs in Metropolitan Toronto to form the present-day city of Toronto. Scarborough easily became one of Canada’s top destinations for immigrants, and the reason why the culture here is quite diverse. The town is quite popular for its natural beauty and outdoor attractions. It has slowly become one of Toronto’s tourist hotspots.
Fun fact: Scarborough was technically the home of the first Tim Hortons, or at least the first attempt by the Toronto Maple Leaf hockey player to establish the business. The first business venture by Horton was the “Tim Horton Do-Nut” coupled with a “Tim Horton Drive-In Restaurant,” located at Kingston and McCowan. However, this business venture failed due to the competitive market at the time.
