Store Your Luggage Around Queenstown With Bounce 

Built around Lake Wakatipu, you can find the stunning vacation town of Queenstown in the Otago region of New Zealand. The city is also surrounded by five mountain ranges, including the Remarkables and Cecil Peak. As the town that invented bungee jumping, you can expect that and more adventures just waiting for you to experience. You may even want to try some ziplining or heliskiing. 

Queenstown was founded and settled by the Maori people before the 1850s. The first European to find evidence of their settlement was Nathan Chalmers and his Tuturau Indian guide Reko in 1853. They discovered spears, baskets for catching eels, and stake nets along the Mataura River. In 1860, the European explorers Nicholas von Tunzelmann and William Gilbert Rees settled in the area. The remains of Rees’ cottage is still standing and is a historic attraction aptly named William’s Cottage. 

If you are a fan of cool weather, you will enjoy some of the outdoor sports in Queenstown since the average temperature is only 50 degrees. The warmest months are November through March when it gets into the upper 60s and lower 70s. Besides bungy jumping, ziplining, and heliskiing, you can find many places to go whitewater rafting, paragliding, and skydiving. For some cold weather sports, try snowboarding and skiing.

The museums, galleries, and memorials in Queenstown can give you a look into the past to learn more about the history of the city and New Zealand. The city also has several museums and quite a few art galleries to choose from. Historic places are scattered all over Queenstown. You can also learn about flora and fauna of the area at one of the parks, gardens, or bird conservatories. These are a few of our top choices:

Lakes District Museum & Gallery: On Buckingham Street, about 20 minutes from Queenstown, you can learn about the history of the Wakatipu, Maori, and Ngai Tahu people. These tribes visited the area often to hunt birds and extract gemstones from the mountains to make jewelry. With a research facility, bookshop, and an art gallery, you can explore and enjoy a hands-on type of tour. Learn about gold miners and the struggles of the early European settlers. See some of the art and artifacts preserved from the 1800s to the present.

Time Tripper: Learn about the geology and mythology of Lake Wakatipu on a trip through time. Underneath the main town pier is a huge underwater observatory. There is a theater where you can watch a 15-minute film that goes back 90 million years to see the dinosaurs that roamed the area. You will get to see how New Zealand was formed and the glacier that carved out Lake Wakatipu. After the movie, the screen goes up to expose a giant window into the lake. Keep your eyes open for trout, eels, and diving ducks.

Aurum Gallery: Stop by Arthur’s Point Road and see the work of Gordon Hanley, who is Australia’s only Living Master of Art. He is a brilliant artist who not only draws and paints, he also does metalwork, drawing with 24ct gold. Other works of art include international and local work by artists such as Sofia Minson, Shane Woolridge, Joel Rea, Spike Wademan, and David Marsh. The exhibits constantly change, though, so even locals get to enjoy visiting often. 

Whether you are someone who loves to shop for anything and everything or someone who hates shopping and only goes to get what they need when it is needed, you will enjoy your shopping in Queenstown. Hit the malls, peruse the quaint boutiques, or just grab some souvenirs from one of the big department stores. Whatever you do, just don’t bring your luggage. Queenstown Mall: This mall is located on Mall Street off Searle Lane and has more than 50 shops to enjoy browsing through. From Adidas to Yankee Candle, there is something for everyone on your shopping list. If you get too stressed out from shopping, stop in at Crow Wine Cellars for a drink. And when you work up an appetite, stop at Squisito Pizza & Pasta for a slice and then Uncle Bob’s Fudge Kitchen for some dessert.

Remarkables Park Town Center: For shopping with a view, visit this quaint shopping center at the base of the Remarkables Mountain Range. You can find it off of Cherry Blossom Avenue in the Remarkables Park Town Center. The center showcases shops from large department stores to small kiosks where locals sell their wares. They even have a medical center and dentist in case you need some medical care. Whether you want to get some name brand items at Outdoor H&J Smith or need to shop on a budget at 2 Cheap, you will love it here. 

Five Mile Center: On Grant Road, about 10 minutes from Queenstown, the Five Mile Center is a fantastic place to get some great souvenirs for the folks back home. Head to The Warehouse for a Queensland tee or mug or Warehouse Stationery for special personalized gifts. While you are there, go ahead and stop in at Joe’s Garage for a burger and some spuds or Hikari Sushi, where you can pick your own sushi from the sushi bar. 

Visiting Queensland is not complete if you don’t at least try their local delights like the Moreton Bay Bug, which is a type of lobster. If you don’t like seafood, try a barbecued snag, which is a long thin sausage. If you are feeling adventurous, you can even try some grilled kangaroo. 

Local Burgers: If you are a burger lover, you can still enjoy the local eats. Fergburger on Shotover Street is the burger connoisseur of New Zealand. The Fergberger is made with prime New Zealand beef, and you can get it with eggs, beetroot, avocado, and even pineapple. They also serve chicken, fish, venison, lamb, and pork. For the vegans, try a falafel patty or tofu. If you haven’t finished your souvenir shopping yet, you can get unique gifts at Fergburger too. 

Special Local Cuisine: If you are interested in trying some real Queensland cuisine, head to Seabelle Restaurant at Mercure Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island. They will serve you some grilled kangaroo with kumara puree or Australian Emu with local greens. Or try their crocodile salad with watermelon and calamari. Rata on Ballarat Street serves Southern New Zealand favorites like smoked eel, pan-fried Hapuku (Australian grouper), or Te Mana lamb. Have some rata donuts or chocolate cremeux for dessert. 

Other Delights: The Taco Medic on Searle Lane will serve you whatever kind of taco you want. From fried fish to seared prawns, their seafood tacos are very popular. But they also have chicken, pork, lamb, and beef. For local pizza flavors, try Frankton Pizzeria on Frankton Road, Fat Badgers Pizza Bar on Camp Street, or Rakau on Arthur’s Point Road. The best Asian food according to the locals can be found on Beach Street where you can get oysters, squid, sashimi, and Hokkaido scallops.
