More about Plymouth

About Plymouth

One hundred ninety miles west of London, the port city of Plymouth has been around a long time. The earliest settlement dates back to the Bronze Age, and the natural harbor made the town an important trading post during Britain's Roman occupation. Initially known as Sutton, or south town in old English, the town came to be known as Plymouth, the mouth of the River Plym, in the 13th century.

The coastal location of Plymouth made it an important port but also made it vulnerable to invasion. In the 15th century, the King of England was forced to construct a castle in the area now known as the Barbican to stave off the raids of pirates. Plymouth also played a legendary part in British history when Sir Francis Drake was recorded as finishing his bowling game on Plymouth Hoe before heading off to defeat the Spanish Armada.

Plymouth played another significant part in history in 1620, when pilgrims set sail from the port for the New World and established Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts, the second British colony in the US.

In the 17th century, Plymouth's importance as a trading port went into decline. Instead, the town became a major dockyard for the Royal Navy, a position which it held for centuries. This strategic importance saw Plymouth bombed heavily during World War II. Significantly rebuilt in the postwar period, Plymouth remains an important military shipyard to this day.
