More about Fiumicino

About Fiumicino

Fiumicino, Italy lies about 20 miles from Rome and is home to Fiumicino Airport (FCO). This extremely busy place serves as the main international airport for the entire country, and receives a huge portion of Italy’s millions of foreign visitors every year.

It wasn’t always this way. In fact, for decades, Rome’s secondary airport, Ciampino, was the main hub for flights to the city. Although Fiumicino was used to help relieve some of the congestion at Ciampino during the 1960 Summer Olympics, Fiumicino didn’t officially open until 1961.

However, national carrier Alitalia invested heavily in the new airport through the 1960s. Soon, Fiumicino surpassed Ciampino as Rome's major international airport. New terminals were added in the 90s and 2000s, expanding the airport to its current size of over six square miles.

In 2020, Fiumicino became the first airport in the world to receive a five star COVID rating from international airport rating agency Skytrax. This was in recognition of the airport's robust response to the COVID 19 pandemic.

Things to do in Fiumicino

For many visitors to Italy, Fiumicino is an unavoidable necessity. And although this huge airport has plenty of shops, restaurants, and other things to keep passengers busy, most people want to head into Rome as soon as possible. However, if you look around, there’s more to do in the vicinity of the airport than you might think.

  • See a less touristed side of Italy in the town of Fiumicino. This former fishing village gave its name to the airport, and the harbor is a great place to explore on a summer evening and enjoy a good meal in one of the local restaurants.

  • Explore an authentic Roman city at Ostia Antica. The ruins of Pompeii in southern Italy get more attention, but just outside Fiumicino Airport is another exceptionally well-preserved Roman town. Explore the atmospheric ruins and enjoy the juxtaposition of Roman homes and businesses with passenger jets flying overhead.

  • Experience a wilder side of Italy at the Riserva Naturale Statale del Litorale Romano. This sprawling nature preserve protects the wetlands and forests along the coast, and is full of hiking trails and scenic views. Of course, this being Italy, it's also home to some ancient ruins.

  • Step back in time at Isola Sacra. This Holy Island was made by the Roman Emperor Trajan in the first century and was an important Roman cemetery. The ancient tombs can still be visited on the island and provide a haunting insight into Roman life.

  • Enjoy expansive views at Tor San Michele. This fortified tower was built in the 16th century to protect the mouth of the river Tiber and was designed by Michelangelo. Close to this impressive monument, you'll also find a public beach where you can soak up the sun and take a dip in the Mediterranean.

Transit options in Fiumicino

  • Fiumicino is connected to Rome by the Leonardo Express train that runs from the airport train terminal to Termini station in the heart of Rome.

  • There is also a commuter train that runs from Fiumicino to some of Rome’s suburban stations, including Tiburtina. This train is slower than the Leonardo Express, taking 45 minutes to reach the city instead of 30. But it’s also around half the price.

  • Several private companies offer shuttle bus service from the airport to the city, including Terravision and SIT bus.

Activities and attractions near Fiumicino

  • Vatican City: One of the biggest attractions in Rome isn't actually in Rome at all. Vatican City is one of the world's smallest independent nations and is completely surrounded by the city of Rome. The home of the Catholic Church, the Vatican has been the center of one of the world's oldest monarchies for the last 2,000 years. Its sprawling museum is home to some of the most valuable works of art ever created, and its central church, St. Peter's Basilica, is one of the grandest religious buildings on the planet. Before visiting this extremely popular city-state, make sure to drop off your luggage at a convenient luggage storage location in Fiumicino, since large bags are not permitted in the church or the museums.

  • Trastavere: There's more to Rome than just ruins and tourist attractions, and you can see another side to the capital in the vibrant neighborhood of Trastavere. This district sits on the west side of the river, putting it closer to Fiumicino than the rest of the city. The narrow streets are a fascinating place to explore, and Trastavere is home to some of the best and most interesting restaurants in Rome – which is saying a lot. The best way to explore Trastavere is on foot, so leave any heavy bags at a Bounce luggage storage service at Fiumicino before visiting.

  • Pantheon: The Colosseum may be an icon of Rome and of Italy, but it's not the city's most visited tourist attraction. That honor goes to the Pantheon, a 2000-year-old temple to the Roman gods that still stands intact right in the center of the city. This stunning building with its ancient concrete dome has to be seen to be believed, and the eight million tourists who visit each year invariably go away impressed. Obviously, this building can get crowded, so be sure to leave any large bags at a luggage storage shop in Rome before you visit.
